I'm going to Laos for 2 weeks and wanted to read up on its recent history while on the plane.

Sorry if this isn't there right subreddit for my question but this sub seemed the closest to what I was looking for.

What are some good sources to read about the history of Laos. Post 1500s would be preferable but I'll take anything really. Finding good sources by myself has been kind of difficult because I'm not sure what is considered reliable.

If you want very modern, I will recommend Post-war Laos: The Politics of Culture, History, and Identity by Vatthana Pholsena. Basically, the book is a study on how Laos is looking for a national identity, and the issues the country faces in doing so. It’s very well-written and thoroughly researched, and kind of bridges a couple of subject areas. I guess I would say it’s political science, but it also is anthropology in the form of ethnographic research, and historical research. So it’s a good slice of modern Laos in these regards.
