Why did Alexander go into Asia Minor and fight the large Persian Empire rather than choose to fight the disorganised tribes to his west in Europe?
I answered this exact question a while ago. Aside from the obvious fact that there was much more wealth in the East, there were also strong legacy reasons for Alexander to continue the mission his father had set for himself before he was assassinated.
