Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

The new US Immigration Czar claims he can look into the eyes of a child and read their future criminal record.

Has the government ever employed a wizard before?

Did some digging this week to find out who the female pulp editors were that published Lovecraft between 1939 and 1965. If you're interested, read my article on Dorothy McIlwraith (Weird Tales), Mary Gnaedinger (Famous Fantastic Mysteries), and Cele Goldsmith Lalli (Fantastic):

After death, the gods have afforded you a special privlege: the ability to go back in time to observe any 100 year period in the history of the world. There are some rules:

  1. you are sent back as an invisible phantom. You have all of your senses, but nobody can see or hear you. You can only observe.

  2. you travel by foot, so you have to plan out what you want to see carefully. The gods have given you the ability to walk on water and through walls so you can see whatever you want, but you can only be in one place at a time.

  3. you can choose where and when you start - anywhere in the world at any time.

  4. after exactly 100 years, you simply disappear. You don’t get to come back to life and share your discoveries.

Where and when do you choose to go? What events will you attempt to witness?
