Today:
Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.
This answer is not from this week but I just had to share it because it was just so frikking amazing and it deserves more attention. I hope this is okay. It was u/commiespaceinvader answer on Marxist historical analyses of the Holocaust from 2 years ago. I happened to find it while I was reading another one of his/her (idk) answers on Jordan Peterson and btw u/commiespaceinvader is a treasure trove of excellent, well-written and fantastic answers.
Greetings! It’s that time of week again. You’ve come for the handpicked microbrewed threads AskHistorians is famous for. It was a pretty darn good week for answers, and combined with me having a decent amount of free time to read/stalk things, we’ve got ourselves over 100 threads here! Which means even more answers then that once you count in all the different users.
Let’s start off with our usual weekly fare and then transition into all the other good stuff shall we?
There was a brand spanking new podcast! Check out AskHistorians Podcast 136 - Clothing, Status, and Race in Colonial Lima w/Professor Tamara Walker. I listen to them while painting or doing my usual nerd stuff.
Tuesday Trivia was back! Oral History themed!
Find yourself some good recommendations in the Thursday R&R thread.
The Friday Free For All had some interesting stuff.
The Saturday Showcase was busy this week! Not only does /u/Klesk_vs_Xaero novel on Italian Fascism continue to take shape, but /u/calvin3sticks asked “DID THE FRENCH BEHAVE AS COWARDS IN THE WWII BATTLE OF FRANCE?” and /u/Monovfox fought through reddit problems to write about Lou Harrison's musical training in the Western world. Very well done everyone!
Have yourselves a delightful weekend folks. Get out there and enjoy the sun (or whatever weather it might be).
Didn't get quite the reading in this week I usually do, but that was because I wasted much of my Sunday reading time writing instead.
Anyways, still some good stuff this week.
/u/monovfox on "What did Chinese musical notation look like?"
/u/kaisermantias answered "Why did such a small number of teams dominate Soviet hockey and football leagues?"
/u/Justinian-Paul on "Why did the Soviet Union want to invade Afghanistan and why did they invade Afghanistan specifically?"
