I've seen the 'During WWI, Germany objected to the use of the shotguns by the Americans" countless times. How true is this?

This TIL seems to turn up in every discussion involving WWI and is its own post every now and then. How true is this? Was the objection taken seriously by others? Did nations bring up Germany's use of gas in response? After the War, did Germany try and put the banning of shotguns into the Geneva convention?

I've written about this previously here, but in short the protest happened, the US told them to shove it, and nothing came of it, although the war ended a month later in any case so it was somewhat moot.
