How would the old norse have tattoo themselves?

How did the norse people tattoo themselves, are there any evidence of what form of Dye, or tools that were used to put tattoos on their bodies?

In brief, there's only one source that potentially describes Norse tattooing. It's a passage in Arabic that reads: "From the nail of one of them to his neck, there are green(?) trees and images and so on." As /u/Platypuskeeper explains:

If the written account is correct, it's not clear it refers to skin at all. It could refer to embroidered cloth for instance, which is known to have existed in Viking Age Scandinavia ... Even if it is the skin that is decorated, there is no evidence to suggest the skin was tattooed or dyed. Tattoos aren't known to have existed anywhere in Europe in that period.
