What do we know about the tradition of monarchs wearing crowns? Did historical sources leave any clues as to why a crown would eventually become the object of choice to symbolize rulership?

This might be a good question to ask over at /r/AskAnthropology.

Some good questions for us at /r/AskHistorians, on the other hand, would be about specific crowns or societies. "Did ancient Egypt restrict who could wear a crown? Did this change when the kingdoms united and united their crowns (the Pschent)?" "On GoT, Robert, Joffrey, and Cersei all have different crowns when they rule. Did medieval European monarchs get custom crowns?" or something along similar lines.
