Today:

Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.

I’ve brought yet another digest for all you fine folks, and it’s a doozy this week! Some great history threads on a staggering array of topics, not to mention the usual weekly (awesome) fare!

There was an absolutely awesome AMA this week. I’ll throw you a bone and you can follow the link to check out IAMA lecturer in human osteoarchaeology - the science of understanding human skeletal remains. AMA about what we can tell about a person and their life from their bones, and how we excavate and prepare skeletons for analysis.

Tuesday Trivia: Ceremonies! had some fantastic write ups from a variety of different people. You should 100% go check it out.

There was some fun activity in the Thursday R&R thread.

Be sure to check out the Friday Free For All for all kinds of good stuff.

Especially this post. Remember the recent giant meta thread about answered flairs? Well it’s not a flair but /u/almost_useless has been working on something that might provide some quality help. It’s still in the early stages but you should absolutely check it out.

And never forget the incredible Saturday Showcase led by /u/Klesk_vs_Xaero.

All you writers deserve way more credit and upvotes. Additional props to all the fantastic question askers. It takes both to make this sub as great as it is!

I posted about this a few days ago but no response. Maybe my question was too broad, so I’ll try to be more specific.

How do we know Columbus fed Arawak babies to dogs?

I see this referenced in many write-ups on Columbus. I know his journal shows us that he at least thought about how easy it would be to exploit groups like the Taino. I’ve read that the Spanish crown accused him of mismanagement and mistreatment of the Spanish. There is proof that he did some questionable, and even terrible things. But how do we know Columbus did some of the more atrocious things he’s accused of doing, like sadistic torture and murdering babies for food?
