Was the second republic a time of freedom ?

by -H-B-

From what i‘ve read it looks like it. Democracy, women were finally able to vote, freedom of speech. Since i‘ll probably have to write an exam about this question, just wanted to make sure, since i couldn‘t find anything saying different: was it really as free as it sounds ?

We read „la lengua de las mariposas“ and to me it seemed atheism was already unwelcome before the civil war ?

Edit: to be clear, i mean the one in spain

The 2nd spanish republic was an incredible time for democracy if we consider what was there before and after (Primo de Rivera and Franco, this one after the Civil War). You have to consider the differences between the socialists and the rest of ideologies ofc, but all of them had representation at some point, that makes the II Spanish Republic a real democracy time.

I cannot give u an answer for your exam cause it's something that your teacher makes specially to prove if you are capable of understand the concept of "freedom", but I recommend you (as a former teacher) to try to read and get the ideas of the "reforms" and the evolution of them into the society.
