Especially during the US civil war, engagements are often written as involving distinctly state raised components (e.x. 1st Vermont Brigade). This seems to completely disappear by the first world war. I have never heard or read any commentary on this pretty major structural change to US armed forces.
How and why did this big switchover happen, especially to the point where state militias are almost a joke by the end of the 21st century?
