Thursday Reading & Recommendations | June 06, 2019

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

What are some good book on Pre-Islamic Persia?

It's a longshot but I'll try anyway:

Does anyone know any good books about the failed colonies of Australia's Northern Territory and early Darwin? Any books about Dundas, Wellington, Essington, Escape Cliffs and 'Palmerston' would be appreciated, especially books that share the Indigenous experience alongside the colonial one.

I've tried Googling and asking on r/Australia, but it's an obscure topic about a remote area.

Could anyone recommend some books on 20th century Portugal? I'm interested in learning about the First Republic, Estado Novo, and Carnation Revolution. I'd prefer academic books as long as they provide at least basic background information for someone not very familiar with modern Portuguese history. I've already added the book Salazar: A Political Biography by Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses to my list but I'll take it off if it's not considered to be good.

Can anyone recommend books about the French fourth republic and its foreign policy ?
