This time of year especially, I pull out some of my grandfather's items from WWII.
There's always this pin that catches my eye that I have never been able to identify or figure out. I was wondering if /r/AskHistorians had someone who could help me identify it. Here it is: https://i.imgur.com/oLGfh7x.png
Description: Pin with crown top, red eagle(or falcon), with the words "Nice" at the bottom.
Information about my grandfather: He was in the US Army during WWII, and we have pictures of him in Italy and France for sure (and maybe Germany). My grandfather passed away when I was very young, and my grandmother said that he would never talk about the war, so we don't know much. Now that I'm much older I've been trying to find more information, and this is just one of those things I've had trouble finding.
He also brought back some German artifacts, but I'm assuming since this word "nice" is in english it was not German, so I keep it in a case with some of his other pins and a picture.
Hi there, this badge displays the coat of arms of the French city of Nice. You can see a slightly more detailed picture of the Coat of Arms here. Nice was liberated by American soldiers on the 30th of August 1944, a few weeks after Allied soldiers landed in southern France during Operation Dragoon. It's possible that your Grandfather was part of the landings and liberation, or he passed through at a later date and picked it up then.
