Depends on what period. Before 1968 homosexuality was illegal (the GDR decriminalized it one year ahead of West Germany.) Following that period the East German government wasn’t too accepting of homosexuality and the Protestant Church was more helpful towards them (even providing them with places to meet.) It wasn’t until the 80s that the government was accepting of them and their rights. They also were one of the first nations in the world to allow homosexuals to join the military (in 1988.)
