When did Americans begin to view individuals from Latin America as being part of a different race (even when said individuals ancestors came from Spain or Portugal)? We’re Hispanics always “othered” by WASP’s like the Irish in the 19th century?

Regarding the "Protestant" part of WASP, I wonder if perhaps Latin Americans and Irish sharing the commonality of mostly being of Catholic background has anything to do with it... And I also wonder if the 'said individuals' you reference being of partial indigenous descent also has something to do with it...
