I know a little bit about what was going on in the area during East Roman and early Ottoman times, and a bit about WWI and after, but don't really know much about what was happening in Eastern Europe during 19th century, but am curious about the strong nationalist movements that emerged, and about why the Balkans were always seen as such a powder keg. Maybe the wars isn't the best place to start. What do ya think?
Probably the best short overview of the topic available in English is Richard C. Hall's The Balkan Wars 1912-1913: Prelude to the First World War.
Prelude to the First World War: The Balkan Wars 1912-1913 by Edward R. Hooton is a similar work, but somewhat longer.
