Why wasn’t Calvary used to disrupt the union defense during Pickett’s charge?

Hi all,

I just returned from a trip to Gettysburg and was confused as to why J.E.B. Stuart’s Calvary unit wasn’t used in support of the infantry during the attack on Cemetary ridge, as they were still a useful unit type at the time. Also why was the confederate infantry marching on such a broad front instead of a more narrow one?

Not an expert but they did try to support the attack. The East Calvary Fields is where this took place and believe it or not the Union was victorious with Gregg and with help from Custer. Wade Hampton received a nasty gash for the CSA and I believe cleaved a man here??
