How was the book of Exodus taught to slaves in the pre Civil War south?

It seems that the story of Moses and his escape from Egypt would have been easy for the slaves of the south to relate to. Did slave owners simply not teach that portion of the Bible to their slaves?

As a follow-up (or perhaps far too broad), what was the general relationship between slaves and slaveowners like, in terms of religion? Did plantation owners generally offer some version of religious education/services to slaves, or was faith left left to slaves? How would slave services differ from the "Sunday school" equivalent for slaveowners?

My apologies if that's too broad, or scatter-brained.
