My Grandfather served in the 24th Division of the US Army in the Korean War as a frontline infantryman in the 10 months before they were pulled out and sent to Japan. What would he have experienced?

My grandfather told a few stories about the war, mostly funny stories, a few sad stories, but almost nothing about actual combat or details about where he was or what he was doing.

He was drafted and was in Korea for 10 months before being pulled out of the war and sent to Nagasaki. I know he was fighting against Chinese soldiers at the time. I believe he was a BAR gunner.

What would he have likely experienced, which parts of Korea would he have been stationed in (besides Busan/Pusan)?

The 24th was the first American division into Korea after the start of the conflict. Initially pushed back to Pusan, they advanced the length of Korea to almost the Yalu River where China entered the war. They were part of the UN forces pushed back towards the 38th parallel, and the fighting that eventually stabilized the line before being pulled out to Japan in January 1952 to refit. Here's a link to a contemporary history of the 24th Division and their experience in Korea. http://24thida.com/books/books/1956_brief_history_24th_division_Korea_OPT_SM.pdf This should provide you with more detailed locations to match up with his participation dates and determine more accurately where he was and what he did.
