Honest question -- what period are you asking about, and where? Childbirth was one of the first indications for anesthetics after their invention; in fact, John Snow, who we now mostly remember for his work on cholera and the broad street pump, was actually an anesthesiologist, and became famous for using chloriform on Queen Victoria during childbirth in 1853 (this is pre-ether).
