Did Harriet Tubman really have a $40,000 bounty on her head?

by JSBach1995

I am writing an essay on Harriet Tubman and need some reliable evidence. There's a common legend that Tubman had a $40,000 bounty on her head. This is repeated in several reliable websites such as a government website http://www.americaslibrary.gov/aa/tubman/aa_tubman_subj.html and even sub .edu sites: http://maap.columbia.edu/place/33.html

Yet other sites say that this is a popular myth made up by Sallie Holley https://www.nps.gov/hatu/planyourvisit/upload/MD_TubmanFactSheet_MythsFacts_2.pdf

If this is a popular myth, I'm surprised that it is repeated on government and educational websites.

I also noticed that the "300 people" is also a myth, but is also noted on the government and educational websites.
