Why did the North Pacific road go bankrupt during reconstruction?

I am not sure if it was the only cause, but a very big reason would seem to be that it was not completed, didn't extend to the Pacific. J. Pierpont Morgan realized this, moved in 1885 to put together a large package of bonds and sold them on the international market. With the money to have the line completed to Puget Sound it then became profitable.
