Hi all, it seems most people are of the belief that Australian Aboriginal people did not practice any kind of agriculture apart from "firestick farming". However I'm certain I read somewhere several years ago that there is evidence of eel farming. Does anyone other finds that point towards farming practices? Cheers
Hi. I answered a question that addressed this recently - although the question was framed around cities and settlement, my answer was mostly about agriculture as a response to other answers that have since been deleted. If you want any more info, feel free to ask. There are also a few more good answers in the FAQ concerning Indigenous life.
If you're new to reading about Indigenous Australia, I'd recommend the book Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe, which takes a good swing at a lot of the bad history surrounding Indigenous Australia. If you want a serious historian's look at Indigenous Australian land usage, have a go at Bill Gammage's Biggest Estate on Earth. If you'd like a broad history of Indigenous Australia, the Rise and Fall of Ancient Australia by Geoffrey Blainey is a decent choice, although it is a little dry.
