How Did Axum/Ethiopia, way down in the Horn of Africa, come to have a huge jewish population?

by RusticBohemian

I understand there may have been an independent line of Jewish Kings with many subjects ruling in what is today Ethiopia, making it one of the few places on earth where Jews managed to establish an independent jewish state. How could this situation come to pass?

It is generally accepted by historians that the Beta Israel were an ultra orthodox back-to-basics movement that sprung out of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Ethiopia did not have an independent line of Jewish kings.
