When did the idea of rich and poor, the idea of class status develop into human culture? When I see cases of African tribes or those tribes in the jungles, I don’t hear about the “rich” and the “poor” since they’re all a tribe and are equally “poor”. How and when did the idea of “rich” and higher social class develop into civilization?
It began with emergance of agriculture which allowed groups to permanently settle. Being sedentary -unlike Hunter gatherer groups - allowed individuals to accumulate wealth. Those who were more successful cultivators became more wealthy, yet the community as a whole was still relatively socioeconomicly equal.
Surpluses in agriculture allowed some to persue jobs besides for farming ,(Potter, Weaver, Scribes, Priest, Merchant, boatmen). These people were very important and quite few in number, so they were able to aquire wealth from servicing the cultivators. Sons often practiced the same trade as thier father's (inheriting wealth and the means to aquire it).
Cities began to form as hubs of commerce and specialised labor. Meaning that the wealthier specialists were living separate from the poorer cultivators. At this point the wealthy and poor began to lead very different lives, giving way to the social aspect of socioeconomic class.
