Short Answers to Simple Questions | July 17, 2019

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

In school, we learned about Chinese immigrants who came to the US in mid to late 1800s to work on the continental railroad.

Was there any (significant) immigration surges from Korea at this same time period? Why or why not?

I feel like I've been taught a lot about the role of Chinese immigrants in building up the nation, but nothing about Korean people.

Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge!

I noticed in a lot of entertainment pertaining to WWII ie Band of Brothers or in some video games the troops would call someone ‘Mac.’ Was there first hand accounts of troops calling each other this or was it just inserted just because? Also what is the significance behind the nickname ?

So I have a very specific question about the Holocaust/Nazi war crimes: in addition to the Jews and Roma killed, if we factor in all those killed along racial and eugenics lines (Poles, Slavs, disabled people, gay people, etc) but exclude those killed for political reasons (communists, dissidents, Jehovah’s Wittnesses, etc), what would the final death toll be?

The reason I’m curious about such specific parameters is that I’m wondering if we can pin an approximate dearh toll specifically to the racist and eugenic aspects of the fascist ideology which National Socialism was, while excluding those deaths that - while undeniably horrific - could have happened under practically any political system.

Why did King Charles XII spend so much time in the Ottoman empire after the battle of Poltava? I know that he was injured, but he spent more than a few years in exile. Surely he wasn't hurt badly enough that he needed that much time to recover?

Did the "Shogun must be a Minamoto" have any basis at all?I understand that while it's uncommon for a non-Minamoto to actually become a Shogun, the Court just handed out the position to Oda Nobunaga like it was nothing. Also historically all Shogun were Minamoto because of the circumstances (one claimed the bloodline for prestige, one formely were part of the old Shogunate) not a Minamoto could be a Shogun. Or was it more like the case with the Kwampaku position where the 5 Families hold it too long it became a tradition?

In other words, did DWM pay royalties or other fees to the Vickers for producing machine guns before WW1 and did they stop paying after the war was declared?

I just visited Florence and would love to get to know more about the Medici family. I studied history so I'm looking for a good book that isn't too 'popular history'. I saw there are books by Hollingsworth, Hibbert, Parks and Strathern, does anyone know any of these and could recommend some? Thank you!
