Late Roman Military

by AvalonXD

The late Roman military is often-ignored as the less liked younger brother of the popular image of principate second-century Roman soldiers. In trying to find easily accessible information about said army you often get conflicting information. Today I just want to ask on the general rank structure of said army especially around the time of Theodosius and heavily pertaining to the Navy as well. thanks in advance

As a historian of the late Roman army, your description speaks to my soul haha. I just wanted to clarify something with you before having a go at answering you because I can only answer part of your question. My current MA research is one the magister militum, which was the highest military rank in the period you're asking about. So I can tell you about them and some of the other highest positions, but I am not aware of lower ranked positions or much about the typical ranks of the navy. Let me know if that is still of interest to you.
