Help! :( Today I started reading a book on the biggest wars and battles of the Middle Ages but I really couldn’t follow what was going on because they talked about Empires and Kings I have to clue about. Im looking for some history books to explain to me what the fuck was going on BEFORE the crusades and DURING the crusades ( like Bizantines, Arabs going to Africa(?) )

I really like when books talk about the people and their like personal things (personality and life ) more than just facts like dates and war strategies.
I'd highly reccomend a reading of Anthony Kaldellis' book Streams of Gold Rivers of Blood which is a narrative history of the Byzantine empire from the 950's to right before the first crusade. It definitely has more of a focus on the people of history like the emperors and generals as well as the historians themselves. Hope it helps.
