When and how did Iraq become majority Shia?

Late 1800s with the rapid conversion of sunni tribes of southern Iraq after they settled in newly irrigated agricultural land near the Shia holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Their contact with Shia sites and scholars led to their conversion. Many Sunnis already used to claim descent from Shia Imams and to them they were simply returning to the authenticity of the faith preached by their ancestors.
