Thursday Reading & Recommendations | July 18, 2019

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Hello! Really new to this sub, so feel free to recommend some previous threads as well if you remember this being discussed here. I’m looking for books on the Reconstruction era. What I’m most interested in is progressive (but pre 20th century civil rights) policies/initiatives that were rolled back or repealed under Jim Crow. Thanks!

I would appreciate a recommendation on a book or two that will help me understand the political history and development of the African continent from around the 1100s to the 20th century. I’ve had no luck finding one or two that I felt would help me explore this. I’m interested in the political history from some of the various kingdoms from pre-Colonial days forward. Thank you.

Any recommendations on the history of the Hanseatic League? Either in general or one/several members?

Hi,

any recommended books about Milan during the Visconti-Sforza period?

I am looking for a book that would look in detail at the Crimean invasion and would look in more detail at how the separatist regions in eastern Ukraine were created. There seems to be a lot of books on the subject but because these are very recent and very politicized events even today it is hard to distinguish which books are biased, made to fit one audience and which are unbiased and try to look at the conflict in detail. More specifically I am not looking for a book that looks primary on the military process in Ukraine, but I am looking for something that would look at the political aspects in Eastern Ukraine and how they led to created of these separatist republics. Preferably I would like the book that is not an introductory on the subject, if that is possible. I would appreciate any suggestions however!

I'm looking for an introduction/overview of the French Revolution! It is a period of history I wish I knew more about.
