1491 is popular, and it has good information, but I was not a fan of the author's writing style, especially his habit of jumping suddenly from one topic to another.

Ancient North America: the Archaeology of a Continent by Brian Fagan is great if you're interested in the earlier periods of North American history. It's a Thames & Hudson archaeology book, so it's high quality with some really nice photographs and diagrams.

Archaeology of Native North America by Dean Snow is slightly more recent and a good companion volume to Fagan's book. It's written at the college level for anthropology students and goes into more detail about early North American societies and how they have been reconstructed.

Daily Life in Pre-columbian Native America by Clarissa Confer is a useful compendium of information about daily life.

Cahokia: Ancient America's Great City on the Mississippi by Timothy Pauketat is a must read for a study of one of the oldest cities in North America. Some of his theories are controversial, but it's a really interesting read.

Finally, Women in Ancient America by Karen Bruhns and Karen Stothert is packed with good information about women in ancient North America, an important topic that generally gets completely ignored in popular books about the ancient Americas.

1491 is still the best overview, but you may also find this section of our Books and Resources list to be of interest.
