I know the George Rawlinson version best but must admit the C19th prose does sound a bit stilted to modern ears. I have read parts of Tom Holland's 2013 translation and was very impressed:

Kirkus Reviews (May 2014) called his translation "a feast for students of ancient history and budding historians of any period." Classics scholar Edith Hall reviewed it for the Times Literary Supplement (November 2013) and said it was "unquestionably the best English translation of Herodotus to have appeared in the past half-century, and there have been quite a few...I am in awe of Tom Holland's achievement."
