If you search on here for "Alperovitz thesis" you'll find a lot of discussion of this. The short of it is: there is definitely evidence that for some of those involved in the planning of the bombs, notably James Byrnes, saw this as an added benefit of the use of the bomb. This however was a very late addition to the "reasons to use the bomb" (and only came about after the main planning had already been done), and was one reason among many to find the use of the atomic bombs to be a good idea, and not shared by all of those involved in the work. The works that argue that this was the only motivation, or the primary motivation, are stretching the evidence far too thinly. Those who argue that this was not at all a motivation are similarly cherry-picking their sources.
