What's the story with this antique sign in the window of a hotel near Leesburg, VA, USA? Why are Organ grinders told to sleep separately? Why are razor grinders and tinkers banned? I assume it is a reproduction of a much older sign, but I could be wrong.
Upon further research, these reproduction signs appear to be mass-produced by Yorkraft in Pennsylvania in the 1960s.
I haven't been able to figure out what the story is with the the razor grinders and tinkers, but apparently Organ grinders were often times gypsies and unsavory types and lived with monkeys, who were used to crank the organ as a kind of travelling gypsy show. Organ grinders had to sleep in the wash house, being inclined to pick up fleas from their monkeys.
