While reading Pepys diary, he mentions on a trip to Kent visiting a part of the navel fleet then going on to see what he describes as "The Saxon Stone near Aylesbury, a stone disc supported on two columns". Does anyone have any information on this and does it still exist?
I think you confused Aylesbury with Aylesford?
And so, staying till about four o’clock, we set out, I alone in the coach going and coming; and in our way back, I ‘light out of the way to see a Saxon monument, as they say, of a King, which is three stones standing upright, and a great round one lying on them, of great bigness, although not so big as those on Salisbury Plain*; but certainly it is a thing of great antiquity, and I mightily glad to see it; it is near to Aylesford, where Sir John Bankes lives. It is known nowadays as Kit's Coty House, a Neolithic tomb.
