Long story short, I'm going back to college next semester and I've decided to try to get my bachelor's degree in history. My only worry is that since I'm studying in the US the amount of debt might be significant and everyone keeps telling me there are no good jobs out there for people with history degrees. Have any of you gone through something similar here? If so, what was your experience after graduating?
Do you know if in your state you need a teaching history degree? In Iowa we have a regular history degree or a degree to teach history at like a highschool level. You can't teach highschool if you didn't recieve the teaching degree. If you think you want to teach in colleges you'd have to pursue a masters degree.
I actually did the same thing last year, I'll finish up this May with my BA and I plan to go on to get a masters and potentially a Phd, I've been working a lot with my professors to help me achieve my goal and they have been incredibly supportive and helpful, mostly offering feedback on writings and projects. I don't know exactly what I would like to do post-graduation but I've taken museum study classes and if education is your goal, masters programs will give you everything you'll need to be effective from what my professors have told me. Look into studying abroad. If you don't want to learn another language (assuming you're a native english speaker) there's always the UK, Australia and Canada. I know it might be a bit of a leap, but I know plenty of people who study abroad and so far no one regrets his decision.
