God’s War: A New History of the Crusades by Christopher Tyreman is arguably the definitive modern single-volume history of the crusades, covering everything from the First Crusade to the Ninth Crusade, as well as non-Holy Land crusades like the Reconquista in Iberia, the Albigensian crusade in France, and the Teutonic crusades on the Baltic.

I have had recommendations but they were dotted with biblical references

Tyerman's "God's War", as Nostalgic_Summertime mentioned, is good, but it's enormous...a little too enormous, almost. It's certainly comprehensive though.

To be honest it is hard to find histories of the crusades that aren't affected by the author's beliefs. It's just usually much less blatant in good academic histories!
