Let's say I am a young English man joining the British Army to fight in WW1, signing up in Liverpool in 1914 What do I know about the conflict before I go, and what will I be told by commanding officers and recruiters before I leave to fight?
You would know that you would be fighting the ‘evil’ nations of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. They would tell you that it was going to be a short war and you would be home for Christmas. During the war you would only hear about your own victories and the losses of the enemy, but nothing about your own losses, both engagements and deaths.
