Depends on what erq but I greatly recommend the Oxford History of the United States.

Personally my favorites are The Glorious Cause by Robert Middlekauff and American Revolutions by Alan Taylor for the Revolutionary Period and the Early Republic. What God hath wrought for the Jackson years, and The Battle Cry of Freedom for the 50s and the Civil War. Then Reconstruction: Americas Unfinished Revolution by Eric Foner.
