I was wondering whether the typical Middle ages haircut (longer on top and trimmed close to the hears, for some examples check the movie "The King" on Netflix) had some sort of functional purpose or was just some trendy fashion choice.
I was thinking about it because in Middle ages everything done had a specific goal or purpose, but I don't see anything functional in this haircut.

If that's not what you're referring to, could you post a link of what specific haircut you're talking about? There was a lot of variation in "medieval" hair styles, so more detail will help.
