So my title is pretty straightforward, I’m currently attempting to learn about Ostrogothic Italy. I only know of Thodoric The Great and Odacer but I want to know about them.
I’m more of a visual learner for sure, but finding information online is scant at best.
Any information you have, or any place you know of where I can get information would be super helpful.
- Early Medieval Europe, by Roger Collins is a good textbook about the period, even if you might want to complete it with some precise studies. But I find it quite good to "set the stage"
- Late Roman Warlords, by Penny McGeorge, contains a good assessment of the politics of Late Imperial Rome under patrices, and there's a bit about Odoacer (who is more in the continuity of Ricimer, although not managing to hold as much the old Italian state structures) and not a Goth (a minor point, but I'd stress some caution on that firmly dismissing the identification of Adovacrius as Odoacer)
- People and Identity in Ostrogothic Italy, 489-554, by Patrick Amaury
-Theoderic and the Imperial Restoration, by Jonathan J. Arnold is a really good study on not just Theodoric and his policies, but the re-building of an Italian Roman state under Goths.
