There is quite a bit of information about the North African Campaign and the lives of the troops in the desert, but I have come across very little information about how the war there affected the locals. I am aware that much of the fighting was in sparsely-populated areas, but there were still civilians in the battle area at times, I am sure. And the fighting must have caused some kind of upheavals even in the cities of Egypt and Libya as well, if for no other reason than the increased military presence.
What kind of an effect did the war have on the civilians and local populations?
My great uncle told the story (he was in NA campaign) that the local population would steal the clothes off the dead and literally dig up the graves. So they had to have guards around or they would steal from them. He really did not like the locals.
