Anyone thought about how were war negotiations conducted in the past?

Let's take for example, when Genghis Khan Khaan sent his riders towards all the corners of the earth to spread gore and the message that everybody should recognizer Genghis Khan as the ruller of the planet. How were those riders able to convey the message when they encountered Russians, Arabs or European nations?
