What percent of black people were free in America before the revolution? Is it true that many American black people were loyal to the crown because of the promise of freedom?

I’m studying this now, and I’m getting conflicting information between the textbook and the Internet. What percent were free before the revolution, and did they have solid reasons to expect freedom from Britain winning?
