I am Somali, and I guess I never thought about it, but nearly the entire every day somali language is made up of loan words from Arabic. Somali names are Arabic names, like Mohamed or Yusuf.

What happened to the language that was spoken in Somali pre 600 AD when the Arabs arrived? Is there any record of that language still in existence?
