How was it determined who was to become a member of the Roman Senate under the times of the Republic? I think much of the membership was composed of people who had held some sort of elected magistrate position, but were there also members who never held any such position? Were the positions in any way hereditary? The way the Senate was selected also changed throughout the times as well.
