I'm trying to recreate Elis City, but I'm having trouble with certain temples about which there is very little information, especially for the time period concerned, 510 BCE till beginning of the Persian war.
I am assuming that there would be a statue of Aphrodite herself, a marble one perhaps, since Praxiteles and Scopas was born much later. Beyond that I'm not sure what it could possibly look like. It seems the city utilizes Doric order columns in some stoas, so it's possibly a doric temple?
Any help would be appreciated.
You've chosen an extremely difficult task. From what I've been able to gather, we know basically nothing about the archaic town of Elis, apart from that it had two areas which might be the agora. The stoa you mention are from 450 or later, and probably did not exist in 510. I can find absolutely nothing about any archaic temple of Aphrodite, though there was an archaic temple to Athena on the town acropolis. Hansen and Nielsen (inventory of poleis, subsection by Roy) suggest that in the archaic period, the town used buildings at the Olympia sanctuary (like the bouleterion), and that the civic nature of the town itself was undeveloped. He says literally nothing about Aphrodite, which is weird. Elsewhere I see that Pausanias mentions a temple of Aphrodite in the agora. Is this for a fiction?
