Why was it that Canada and the 13 Colonies were not more connected while under British rule and remained distinct rather than being 1 collection of colonies?

My assumption is that if they were more connected it would have been more likely that Canada would have joined American Independence, but it seems like Britain always saw the two areas as being distinct. Were they simply to far from each other in those days to be consider one? Or was it the recent 7 years war that hadn't allowed them to become a more singular colony/group?
