I know that a prerequisite for invasion was to defeat the RAF, but did the admiralty (or others) intend to talk Hitler out of the operation in any case? What was their official analysis at the time on the plausibility of success?

Obviously more can be said about Sealion, but there answer I gave here may be of interest. The tl;dr of which is that the Germans had neither the necessary materiel or knowledge/experience to stage a major opposed amphibious landing against what was at the time, the largest navy in the world.
