I was taught in school that the Mujahideen were funded by the CIA to fight the Soviet Union invasion in Afghanistan, but I’ve then read that the Taliban was created out of the Mujahideen.
What happened?
The narrative is basically incorrect. More properly, the Mujaheddin splinted into factional infighting. The Taliban formed, and some former Mujaheddin members ended up in their ranks, but many others did not, and they in fact formed the genesis of the Northern Alliance.
