I would also take normal books but I would really prefer audiobooks.
Alec Nove's An Economic History of the USSR (final edition) is going to be a great book on industrialization, but I'm not sure how easy it is to find an audio version.
Stephen Kotkin's Magnetic Mountain is a great microhistory of the First Five Year Plan and industrialisation in Magnitogorsk. His second volume of his Stalin biography (Stalin: Waiting for Hitler) is very recent, covers the First Five Year Plan period and beyond (to June 21, 1941) and is definitely available as an audio book.
